SWYFS provides a range of services to youth, from counseling to individual and group support. These range from short-term therapy to longer-term interventions, and are culturally sensitive. The organization also has an Education Center that helps youth ages 14 to 19 transition into the work force or GED program.
Community Roots Housing
Community Roots Housing is an affordable housing project that was started by a group of Capitol Hill community activists. The group now owns nearly 50 apartment buildings in the Seattle area. Its mission is to provide quality affordable housing for people of all backgrounds. To achieve that, it works with partners to raise funds and develop projects. The group plans to use the grant funds to construct 1,500 new affordable homes within the next five years, expand its capacity-building work, and provide technical assistance to local neighborhoods.
Community Roots is home to a diverse community of educators, children, and families. Eliza enjoys exploring the city on foot, gardening, and drawing. In addition, she enjoys helping to maintain a rooftop garden.
Streetcar line
Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan has already allocated funds to the streetcar line along 1st Ave. However, city council has introduced amendments to divert this funding to the Center City Connector, a new light rail line connecting downtown with the University of Washington. The Seattle Department of Transportation is scheduled to update its cost estimates next year, but a decision to fully fund the streetcar line would be up to the next mayor and city council.
When riding the streetcar, it’s important to be aware of when it will be arriving at a stop. You can ask the driver to wait for a few minutes or request the next stop. You can also check the kiosk screen for the arrival time. Be sure to have your fare ready before boarding the streetcar. You can also pay with a mobile phone or at a ticket vending machine on the platform.
